“We are not human beings
having a spiritual experience.
We are spiritual beings
having a human experience."
-Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955)
Catholic Priest, Geologist, Mystic
Often, one will recognize a physical or mental imbalance and take steps to remedy its effects. Likewise, when the spirit nature is out-of-whack, people notice the symptoms. Unfortunately, spirit dis-ease is often misdiagnosed. Frequently, the person suffering from spirit unrest is judged and sorted into improper categories. People observing the broken one will say something like:
“He’s always been a loner.”
“She’s a know-it-all.”
“He’s a jerk. Have you seen the way he treats his wife and family?”
“She is so self-involved . . . her poor children.”
“You’ll never see him out in public. He’s an isolationist.”
Meanwhile, the sufferer will hear internal tapes, like:

“I wish they would just leave me alone.”
"If they didn't see it, it didn't happen. If I act superior, they won't know how inept I really am.”
“Don’t talk. Don’t tell. Don’t let them know.”
“I don’t need them, and I sure don’t want them.”
“I can’t take it anymore. I just want it to end.”
Lack of awareness is the key to chronic spiritual disease. Until recognized and labeled correctly, spiritual disease can masquerade as antisocial or egomaniacal behavior. Humans try to manage this state with lower gods – alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling, food, work, achievement . . . the list goes on and on. But these lower gods never fill the terrible break in our spirits. So, what should we do?
The Truth is the answer. Happily, because the Truth is one with Creation, it is ready to relieve the pain of separation from Source. It is a simple task, but not easy. Human beings resist the call of God because answering the call demands reduction of egocentric practice. Remember, EGO means easing God out. The easiest way for the ego to take charge is by using our perception of self to create confusion. The ego tries to fool us into believing one of two untruths:
1.You are/can be god.
2. There is a God, but you are of no value to It.
These two untruths lead to separation from Source, which is what causes the breaks in our spirits. We were created to be connected - to God, to others, even to the earth on which we live. The broken spirit lives in separation, disconnected from its very essence. Disconnection is the Great Lie of our egos. In the end, Truth can win out. Once aware of the separation, man can seek wholeness. Small demonstrations of spiritual sanity will erupt. He will ask for help. He will open his mind. He will begin to transform back into the person he was intended to be from the start.
“Because of our faith, (Truth) has brought us into this place of highest privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to actually becoming all that God has had in mind for us to be."
–Romans 5:2; The Living Bible
